One of my favorite parts of writing Willy the Whale was creating moments where Willy shows just how big his heart really is.
Children love stories where someone steps in to help, and I knew Willy needed to be the kind of character who reminds kids that kindness can change everything. That is why I wrote the scene where Willy meets Samy the seal.
Samy was feeling sad because he was worried about his teeth. “My teeth are in trouble,” he told Willy. “They are starting to decay. If they fall out, how will I eat and play?” You can imagine how heavy that worry must have felt for little Samy. Teeth are important for smiling, for chewing food, and for enjoying life. Samy was so afraid that losing them would take away his joy.
But Willy, being the kind friend that he is, didn’t just swim past. He wanted to help. With a flick of his magical tail, Willy brushed Samy’s teeth until they were bright, shiny, and healthy to the core. Samy’s frown quickly turned into a wide, happy smile. The moment was filled with laughter,
relief, and the joy of knowing that problems can be solved with a little help from a friend.  Willy also reminded Samy that brushing every day was the best way to keep those teeth strong.
Why Helping Matters So Much
I love this scene because it shows children that helping others doesn’t always mean doing something huge. Sometimes, it’s as simple as noticing when a friend feels worried and offering support. For Samy, help came in the form of Willy’s magical tail brushing away his fear. For kids in real life, help might mean sharing a kind word, offering a toy, or encouraging a friend to do the right thing. When children read about Willy helping Samy, they see an example of compassion in action. It shows that friends don’t leave each other alone in their struggles. Instead, they look for ways to make life a little brighter.
Lessons Kids Can Learn from Willy and Samy
The story of Willy and Samy is more than just a fun adventure—it’s also a gentle lesson for children. Here are some of the important ideas kids can take away:
- Kindness feels good for both the giver and the receiver. Willy was happy to see Samy smiling again, and Samy was grateful for the help.
 - Daily habits matter. Just as Willy reminded Samy to brush every day, kids can learn that taking care of themselves is part of being strong and healthy.
 - Helping others is magical. It might not involve a sparkling whale’s tail in real life, but it can make someone’s day shine just as brightly.

How Parents and Teachers Can Use This Story
This part of the book opens the door to fun and meaningful conversations. Parents can use it to remind children about the importance of brushing their teeth daily. Teachers can use it as a starting point for a discussion on why we should take care of our health and help our friends. You can even act it out in the classroom or at home. Let one child pretend to be Samy the seal, looking worried about their teeth, and another child be Willy who comes to the rescue. Role-playing makes the story come alive and helps children really feel the message of caring for others. Art activities are another wonderful idea. Children can draw Samy smiling with his sparkling teeth after Willy helped him. Imagine a whole classroom wall filled with colorful seals showing off bright, healthy smiles.
The Magic of Small Acts of Kindness
What I love most about Willy’s story is that it shows kindness does not need to be complicated. Willy didn’t give Samy a lecture or ignore his worries—he simply used what he had, his magical tail, to help. Children can see that they, too, have their own “magic.” It may be their words, their time, or even their creativity. Each act of kindness can make someone’s world brighter. Willy’s happiness after helping Samy shows kids that helping others doesn’t just make the other person feel better—it makes you feel good too. That’s the real magic of kindness.
